Empathy is crucial to build understanding, help us be compassionate, and inform us in the best way to help. But, I agree it should not be used as a mirror. If mirrored completely, I agree it can overwhelm us and lead us to poor decision making. Regardless, for those of us who have taken on us the name of Christ, it may be a covenantal obligation to develop empathy.... to "mourn with those that mourn, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort."
If we are to have His countenance and be as He is we will emulate Him. The scriptures say, "and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.” I believe it is our covenantal duty to do the same.
